Meet the Bertrands
John Bertrand
John received his B.S. and M.S. in education from Illinois State University. He currently holds life teaching credentials for elementary and secondary education in California and Illinois. After a successful teaching career as a band director, orchestra conductor and chorale director for 15 years he co-founded Bertrand’s Music in San Bernardino in 1983.
John strives to make Bertrand’s Music reflect the needs and desires that every band director wants for their students. The entire company was founded on the value that music is a vital part of every child and adult’s life. John has an unending desire to serve today’s students and music teachers. After 30 years in business Bertrand’s Music continues to carry out John’s goals and values through his dedicated employees.
Barbara Bertrand
Barbara is the co-founder of Bertrand’s Music in 1983. In addition to supporting John in developing and improving Bertrand’s Music she pursued her own career. She is a certified medical assistant and worked with students from K through 5 for over 15 years in the Poway and San Bernardino Unified school Districts. Also as a couple with John she presented communication workshops to married couples internationally for over 20 years and hosted a radio show entitled “Couple Heart of the Family”.
Even with her busy life she found time to raise 4 sons and volunteer her time in her church and community. Today she enjoys spoiling her 6 grandchildren, attending Padre’s games and spends the rest of her time volunteering for her church (San Rafael Church), several charities and organizations in San Diego including Rides and Smiles an organization, sponsored by Jewish Family Services, that provides rides to seniors in the community.
John Bertrand Jr.
John Jr. has been working at Bertrand’s Music since 1985. He married Janet in 1998 and they have 4 wonderful children. John III, Haley, Lauren, & Noah all grew up in the San Diego area and attend schools in the Poway Unified school district. John has a passion for Bertrand’s Music that is hard to match. In his free time he loves to workout with his wife Janet, enjoy his family, and hike Torrey Pines.
Jeff Bertrandd
Jeff is a graduate of the University of San Diego. After college Jeff pursued a career on the management side of minor league baseball, spending 1 year in Colorado Springs, and 3 Years in Idaho Falls. After 4 years of missing family and friends, Jeff returned home to San Diego and began to work part time for Bertrand’s Music in the fall of 1997. After several rental seasons Bertrand’s has become Jeff’s heart and soul.
Jeff meet Chrissy and got married in 2012. They love hiking, snow skiing, and attending USC Football games. Jeff has had season tickets for the past 3 years to USC Football.
Joel Bertrandd
Joel Started playing the clarinet in 5th grade. He played clarinet throughout high school with the Marching Sundevils at Mt. Carmel High School. Joel graduated from Mt. Carmel in 1999, and went to school in Missouri for Baseball. He has been volunteering as a Pony League Baseball coach in Rancho Peñasquitos for six years. Joel has been working at Bertrand’s for 13 Years. Joel was happily Married in May 2009, and he now has 2 sons, Jake and Jax.
